At first glance, this topic might seem, well, a little shallow. After all, how hard can it possibly be to serve as a reference for someone? All you have to do is answer a few questions and you’re done, right? Not necessarily. Are there questions you shouldn’t answer? How candid should you be? What are the consequences of violating company policy? Are you permitted to offer your opinion? How do you know the call is really from an employer interested in hiring the person for whom you’ve agreed to be a reference?
